About Webinars

In this virtual classroom, participants can join in a seminar led by Poynter faculty and visiting faculty. This screencast includes live audio and a slideshow presentation in which participants can post questions and respond to poll questions posed by the host.

In the last few years, automatic transcription has crossed a threshold where it’s now accurate enough to be useful. A slew of new automatic transcription services are being built on top of that technology, offering the promise of a future free of painstaking by-hand transcription. But transcription is only the beginning.

Three years in development, Descript is a new app (Mac, with a Windows release imminent) that harnesses the most advanced automatic transcription technology to create the world’s first audio word processor.

With Descript, you can edit audio footage by modifying its text transcript: cut and paste key passages together, remove superfluous words and more— without touching a waveform (though you can do that too).

Descript transforms the workflow of anyone working with voice audio — whether you need a straightforward transcript for a print story, are producing a podcast, have mountains of interview footage to pull excerpts from or videos to caption.

In this webinar, Descript CEO Andrew Mason will provide an overview of the state of automatic transcription technology, and then show you how to use Descript for both simple transcription and full audio editing. Be among the first to learn about this exciting new tool.

This training event is part of a series on digital tools, supported by Google News Initiative and in partnership with the American Press Institute and The Poynter Institute, funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
