In an online group seminar, you will gather with other participants in a virtual space, logging in from anywhere, day or night, over the course of several weeks. A faculty member guides the group through new material, moderates discussions and provides individual feedback.

Learn to create beautiful, functional websites in this three-week online group seminar. This hands-on, project-based course will help you develop web publishing skills from the ground up – no prior coding or development experience necessary.

Whether you’ve only dabbled in web technologies and need to get up to speed – fast – or have some experience and want to flesh out your knowledge, this course will teach you the essential principles and techniques needed to create websites that communicate your message and engage your audience.

You can participate in this training experience when and where you want, and you’ll gain a comprehensive skill set focused on the principles and techniques needed to build polished, professional sites.

It may take up to four hours each week to complete the work.

Please note: This is the first in our two-part series on Building Effective News & Information Websites. Later this year, we’re offering the follow-up, which focuses on making websites interactive and dynamic with jQuery and WordPress.

Here’s what you can expect each week:

Week 1: Web Fundamentals -- In this week, you’ll learn how websites work, how modern audiences access the web, a website-building process, how to secure server space and a domain name, essential developer tools, HTML5 and more.

Week 2: Web Design Principles -- In this week, you’ll learn web design fundamentals, key Photoshop techniques for web designers, how to create website wireframes and more.

Week 3: Web Design Technologies -- In this week, you’ll learn CSS fundamentals, how to work with CSS frameworks and more.

Casey Frechette is an assistant professor in the journalism and media studies department at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg where he teaches digital media and researches technology, journalism and education.
