About Webinars

In this virtual classroom, participants can join in a seminar led by Poynter faculty and visiting faculty. This screencast includes live audio and a slideshow presentation in which participants can post questions and respond to poll questions posed by the host.

Google's search tools will help you research stories, discover new trends, and find useful data sets to support stories. This session will give you the skills to understand these tools specifically, as well as how to understand search generally.

Reporters on all platforms, video and photo journalists, writers, bloggers, independent journalists, producers, storytellers and anyone interested in using Google tools effectively to research, find information, visualize and produce better stories.

Course Instructors:

Vanessa Schneider

Vanessa coordinates media outreach efforts as a program manager for Google’s Geo organization. She works closely with media professionals around the world using Google Maps and Google Earth for research and storytelling. Previously, Vanessa worked at The New York Times, Time Inc., and at New York startup Hot Potato, acquired by Facebook in 2010. Vanessa earned bachelor's degrees in both Journalism and Culture and Communication from Ithaca College.

Nicholas Whitaker

Nicholas Whitaker is Media Outreach Leader at Google Media Tools. Before joining Google in 2010, Whitaker spent the previous decade producing, directing,editing, and shooting videos and still images for news, commercial, entertainment and advocacy media. Nicholas has also been a professor at Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, and Marymount Manhattan College, teaching courses in video production, new media and media theory.
