In this series of sessions, you'll get hands-on training you can use immediately in your work. The presentations include:

  • Google Research Tools: Search, Trends, Correlate and Public Data Explorer Google's search tools will help you research stories, discover new trends, and find useful data sets to support stories. This session will give you the skills to understand these tools specifically, as well as how to understand search generally.

  • General Mapping Overview In this session, you'll check out some examples of how newsrooms are using these tools for storytelling. You'll also get an overview of Google Maps Engine, Maps API, Google Earth, Street View, Google Fusion Tables, Google Earth Engine, Google Crisis Map and Google Permissions (guidelines and licensing).

  • Customs Maps Training Learn how to build custom maps with your data. This is a step-by-step training session on how to build a custom, interactive map with Maps Engine Lite/Pro and Fusion Tables.

  • Google Earth For TV Learn how to use Google Earth for television. Find the best way to build a quick and easy Google Earth tour for air, learn movie rendering tips, and understand Google Permissions guidelines.

  • Google+ and Hangouts On Air In this session, you'll get an introduction to Google+ and Hangouts. You'll learn best practices, as well as how media outlets are using them to create compelling content and connect with audiences. Get step-by-step instructions on how to run a Hangout and stream it on your own homepage or YouTube channel. Create a Google+ profile at

  • YouTube Best practices Find out about YouTube best practices, including YouTube Live stream.

Vanessa Schneider

Vanessa coordinates media outreach efforts as a program manager for Google’s Geo organization. She works closely with media professionals around the world using Google Maps and Google Earth for research and storytelling. Previously, Vanessa worked at The New York Times, Time Inc., and at New York startup Hot Potato, acquired by Facebook in 2010. Vanessa earned bachelor's degrees in both Journalism and Culture and Communication from Ithaca College.


Nicholas Whitaker

Nicholas Whitaker is Media Outreach Leader at Google Media Tools. Before joining Google in 2010, Whitaker spent the previous decade producing, directing,editing, and shooting videos and still images for news, commercial, entertainment and advocacy media. Nicholas has also been a professor at Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, and Marymount Manhattan College, teaching courses in video production, new media and media theory.
