Students are flooded with visual images every day. Social media feeds give them a curated view of people’s lives, traditional media spray photos, videos and graphic elements all day long. There is a difference between visual storytelling about oneself and visual storytelling by oneself. Journalists need to assume the audience has no reference point for the stories they tell and that impacts how they build visual images.

This session will guide you through building lessons to help your students move from making snapshots to committing acts of visual journalism. It will help you understand the difference between memory triggers and news photography.

It will also outline several class assignments you can give your students to help them develop their visual journalism skills, assignments that are not equipment-dependent so they can be inserted into any journalism course.

This session is designed for educators who are helping students learn the basics of journalism and visual journalism storytelling, regardless of the tools they have at hand.

Course Instructor:

Mark E. Johnson

Mark E. Johnson is the Senior Lecturer of Photojournalism and Chief Technology Officer at the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication where he oversees the Visual Journalism program. An early digital disciple and technology geek, he believes that the story is always more important than the form it’s presented in.
