Some of the biggest names in local and network television journalism are graduates from the Poynter Institute’s Power Reporting seminar. Our graduates include John Larson, Boyd Huppert, Byron Pitts, Katie Couric, Stuart Watson, Byron Harris and Roberta Baskin. Now, it’s your turn.

For 17 years, The Poynter Institute’s Al Tompkins has led this seminar that is a bedrock for Poynter teaching. You will get feedback on your work, will sharpen your writing and storytelling skills, learn how to enterprise stories and look beyond the obvious, tired ways of covering daily news. Of course, Poynter focuses on ethical decision-making skills and adding diverse voices to stories.

We keep things practical and usable.

In the online seminar, Poynter's Al Tompkins will guide you through weekly live discussions and feedback on your work.

When you're done, you'll have a toolkit full of new skills and a road map to move your career ahead.

All sessions will be repeated thrice a day at 9 a.m. 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern

Week One - Clearer Stronger Writing: (Live online class on Aug. 10)

  • Story leads-Don’t Waste My Time
  • Story Shapes-what goes where in a story and why
  • Finding a tight Three Word Focus

  • No Live class week of August 15

Week Two: Make it Memorable - Aim for the Heart: ( Live online class on Aug. 24)

  • Using the EIGHT Big motivators to make your story more interesting
  • The Power of Natural Sound
  • How to choose memorable soundbites
  • How to write so your copy sounds like Morgan Freeman (seriously-you can learn this!)

Week Three - Find stories others miss: ( Live online class on Aug. 31)

  • How to use Twitter and Facebook as search engines

  • Learn how to mine campaign-spending reports in the coming election, investigate corporations using SEC data, investigate airliners, OSHA, EPA, property records, government salaries, contracts and more.

  • We will also explore FOIA laws and show you the data trails that we all leave behind and journalists can use to find information about practically anybody.

Week Four: The Power of Critical Thinking- the single most important skill a journalist can have: (Live online class on Sep. 7)

  • I will show you how to expose weak reasoning and flabby facts and strengthen your storytelling.

  • We will power beyond the “what happened” to “why, how” and “why does this matter?” This skill will make your reporting stand out.

Week Five - How to be a social media Ninja: (Live online class on Sept. 14)

  • You will learn how to make your social media posts feed your station website and on-air newscasts.

  • You will learn the words that will get your posts booted off Facebook news feeds.

  • You will see what kinds of videos play best on social media and why just dumping TV stories online won’t work.

  • We will show you why interactivity and graphics are key to social media success.

All sessions will be taught by The Poynter Institute’s Senior Faculty for Broadcast and Online, Al Tompkins.

Who should take this course:

This online group seminar is open to Univision employees only. TV reporters and VJ/MMJ/backpack journalists for television, as well as college educators and international journalists. This seminar also is perfect for photojournalists who want to learn to write and report.

Course Instructor:

Al Tompkins

Al Tompkins is The Poynter Institute’s senior faculty for broadcasting and online. He has taught thousands of journalists, journalism students and educators in newsrooms around the world. His teaching focused on writing, reporting, storytelling, ethics, critical thinking, photojournalism, social media and online journalism.

Tompkins has taught television news producers, reporters, photojournalists and managers in his workshops in 49 states, Canada, Egypt, Ecuador, Denmark, Cayman, Iceland and South Africa. He has taught and coached print newsrooms in the U.S. and abroad how to build interactive news websites, how to use video more effectively online and how to manage ethical issues that arise online.

Al is an FAA licensed drone pilot and has organized and lead drone journalism workshops around America that produced more than 325 graduates. He co-authored the drone ethics guide.

Tompkins is the author of the book “Aim For The Heart: Write, Shoot, Report, Produce for TV and Online,” which is being used by more than 125 universities as their main broadcast writing, reporting and ethics textbook.

He co-authored four editions of the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation’s “Newsroom Ethics” workbook. In 1998, Tompkins joined Poynter’s faculty from his job as news director at WSMV-TV in Nashville, Tenn. For 24 years, he worked as a photojournalist, reporter, producer, anchor, assistant news director, special projects/investigations director, documentary producer and news director.

Awards: During his two and a half decades as a journalist, and nearly two decades as a teacher at Poynter, Tompkins has been awarded many of journalism's highest honors.

Tompkins won the National Emmy, the Peabody Award (group award), the Japan Prize, the American Bar Association’s Silver Gavel for Court Reporting, seven National Headliner Awards, two Iris Awards and the Robert F. Kennedy Award. Tompkins was inducted into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame and in 2008 was awarded The Governor’s Award, the highest honor given by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He has also been honored by the National Press Photographers Association and the Radio and Television News Foundation for contributions to journalism and journalism education.

Al is a juror for the Scripps Howard National Journalism Awards and served as a final juror on the duPont-Columbia Awards, and the Investigative Reporter and Editor awards.

Al earned a Master's Degree in Digital Journalism and Design from the University of South Florida and a B.A. degree in journalism from Western Kentucky University.
