About Certificate Programs

Certificates of proficiency are designed to measure your knowledge of essential skills or information. To receive a certificate, take the NewsU courses associated with that certificate program and then successfully complete the online assessment for each course. Once you've passed all the assessments, you will receive your certificate from Poynter's NewsU.

This Poynter Prepared Membership Digital Skills Certificate demonstrates that you have a solid foundation in the unique challenges and opportunities of gathering, producing, publishing and promoting digital news stories using text, images and audio. This certificate for members of the Poynter Prepared Membership Program who seek to understand the essential skills and best practices involved with working on the Web.

The courses in this Certificate are:

  • Developing a Successful Journalistic Blog
  • Editing Triage: Managing Workflow Effectively
  • Getting Started with Mobile Reporting
  • The Camera With You: How, And When, To Shoot With A Smartphone
  • Writing Headlines for Digital and Mobile Media
  • Using Analytics to Drive Website Success

To earn the certificate, you must pass the assessments for each course prescribed in this program. Questions in each assessment will cover the content from the respective module, so we encourage you to work through each module carefully and thoroughly before taking the assessment. You will each have three chances to pass each assessment, so you can always review the material again if you don't pass the first time.

Unlike traditional quizzes and activities from Poynter's NewsU, these assessments won't tell you the answers. You will simply get a score when you complete the assessment. So make sure you study hard when you take the courses.

How Certificates Work:
  • Each assessment contains about 15-20 multiple-choice and true-false questions
  • You must score at least 80 percent to pass each assessment
  • You'll get three chances to pass each assessment
  • You'll have 30 minutes to complete each assessment
  • When you pass all the assessments, you will receive your certificate
